We are pleased to announce Galerie Lelong’s participation in Art Basel 2011 with a selection of works underscoring the gallery’s long-standing association with pioneers of European and Latin American modernist and post-modernist art. On view will be a selection of significant and historic works from our New York and Paris galleries by artists Jannis Kounellis, Ana Mendieta, Joan Miró, Hélio Oiticica, Jaume Plensa, Sean Scully, Kiki Smith, and Nancy Spero.
- Galerie Lelong celebrates decades of collaboration with Joan Miró and his Estate. We have also published the artist’s extensive Catalogue Raisonné. On view will be a presentation of rare pieces including a painting on tarred paper from 1936 and the last extant cast of the sculpture, Oiseau Solaire, from 1966. The Ladder of Escape, a major retrospective of Miró’s work is currently on view at the Tate Modern.
- Ana Mendieta’s hybrid work of performance, sculpture, and photography is now considered to be a central part of avant-garde post-war American art, but has yet to gain wide recognition in Europe. To further the appreciation of her art, a focused presentation of the artist’s work in various media will be on view.
- Since his Tate Modern retrospective in 2007, Hélio Oiticica has been acknowledged as a leading Brazilian modernist figure, and one of the key bridges to post-modernist art. Galerie Lelong is pleased to present a rare work from the 1950’s.
- Our presentation will also include a monumental group of new stainless steel sculptures by Jaume Plensa entitled The Three Graces. The artist recently debuted his outdoor sculpture, Echo, at Madison Square Park in New York, and a large retrospective of his work is currently on view at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK.
- Among Sean Scully’s other 2010 museum exhibitions, the Museum Ludwigshafen presented a solo show of the artist’s paintings from the 1980’s and 90’s. Ookbar, an important work from the early 90’s, will be presented at Art Basel. The piece was last shown in a 2008 traveling retrospective of Scully’s work at the Fundació Miró, Barcelona and the MACRO, Rome.
- Nancy Spero is considered a pioneer of post-modernist and feminist art. We will present Propitiatory, one of the artist’s last extant polyptychs. Spero was recently honored with a traveling retrospective at the Centre Pompidou and Serpentine Gallery, and with a presentation of Cri du Coeur at the São Paulo Biennial. In 2010, Prestel Publishing released a comprehensive monograph authored by Christopher Lyon.
